Understanding and patience can be a welcoming friend
When I admit to someone the truth about my disease, they are normally speechless. Learning that I am....different....is a lot to take on. It's not easy to hear that I inject two different medications a week, take countless pills, and sleep with a heated blanket every night because of my diseasES. That's right, plural. That's another freak out. I usually get the "oh my" or "bless your heart" or worst yet the blank stare of overwhelming news. It takes a special person or persons to genuinely handle the news of an autoimmune sort. The worst part is when I get the "have you tried...." YES!!!!! And truth be told, I would love to be rid of this. I would love to pretend that this was not a part of my existence. When I finally find an understanding friend, it's almost like ice cream on a warm day. It soothes the soul. It's so hard to go through this life pretending that you're normal. Pretending that you're not in pain all of the time. This life has so much to offer. We only have to remember to keep our eyes on the prize. Most importantly, we need to remember that we are not alone.
